Abstract

Pigment in a cell suspension absorbs less light than the same quantity of pigment in solution. The difference is most obvious at the peaks of maximum absorption in the blue and red regions of the spectrum at λ = 436nm and λ = 675nm. Although theoretical predictions showed that this Package effect is dependent on cell size and intracellular pigment concentrations, there are no detailed studies of the effects of ultrastructural changes on light absorption.
