Carbonic Anhydrase Kinetics and Molecular Function

  • Chapter
The Carbonic Anhydrases

Abstract

Detailed kinetic and mechanistic studies of the zinc metalloenzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) became possible only after the discovery of its existence in the form of two distinct though homologous erythrocyte isozymes, CA I and CA II. For a comprehensive early review of the structure and function of CA, see reference 72. Studies in the last decade have led to the discovery of the low-specific-activity CA III in skeletal muscle that has now been kinetically investigated. Other CA isozymes (IV–VII) have now also been identified102 but have not been sufficiently characterized by kinetics to cover here.
