Abstract
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) (EC 4.2.1.1.) is highly concentrated in the vertebrate retina; e.g., in birds CA is 3% of the total tissue protein in the retina.10,21 The retinas of most major groups of vertebrates have high CA activity20 with amphibians having the lowest, while birds and reptiles have 25 times as much CA.20 Most mammals are intermediate. No relationship was found between high CA activity and degree and type of vascularization.
