Distribution and Functions of Carbonic Anhydrase in the Gastrointestinal Tract

  • Chapter

Abstract

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is found along the entire gastrointestinal tract, from salivary glands to the colon. This review focuses on the distribution of CA and its role in gastric, pancreatic, biliary, and intestinal function. Numerous roles sub-served by the enzyme in the GI tract—acid–base transport, neutral salt absorption, cell volume, and intracellular pH regulation—have in large part been explored with the use of specific inhibitors. However, as Maren104 has argued, strict guidelines must be followed in their use. Emphasis will be given to those studies in which these precepts have been followed, most notably in the choice of inhibitor concentration.
