The Eye

Topical Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
  • Erik A. Lippa

Abstract

Although systemically administered carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors are effective in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma, patient acceptance and compliance are limited by side effects such as fatigue, anorexia, gastrointestinal disturbances, paresthesias, renal calculi, and loss of libido, and there are concerns regarding the rare association of CA inhibitors with occurrences of aplastic anemia. The goal of producing an efficacious topical CA inhibitor for the treatment of glaucoma without the side effects caused by systemic CA inhibition has proved elusive.
