Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors in Ophthalmology

Abstract

Aqueous humor is secreted by the ciliary processes into the posterior chamber (Fig. 1). Intraocular pressure (IOP), normally less than 20 mm Hg, results from the balance between the production (approximately 2 µl/min) and the drainage (approximately 0.20 µl/min per mm Hg) of aqueous humor. Elevated IOP due to reduced drainage of aqueous humor, open-angle glaucoma, causes optic nerve damage; therefore, medical therapy is directed to pharmacologically increasing the drainage or decreasing the production of aqueous humor.6,32,44
