Abstract
The only value of neuropsychological testing in the hands of an experienced neuropsychologist is to support the conclusions already reached through interview and history taking. While this opening salvo is hyperbole, it is probably correct for the majority of cases. The purpose of this chapter is to offer suggestions to the clinician as to how he/she can conduct a richer (i.e., more informative about brain-behavior relationships) interview and history in the course of the neuropsychological assessment. An inference to be taken from the following discussion is that neuropsychological assessments which omit or skimp on the clinical interview and history can be misleading or invalid, often grossly so. The value of this chapter to the reader will vary with the reader’s experience and extent to which he/she shares this author’s assumption on the value and role of interviewing and history taking in neuropsychological assessments.
