The Polychaete Fauna of the Galápagos Islands

Galápagos Marine Invertebrates

Part of the book series: Topics in Geobiology ((TGBI,volume 8))

Abstract

In general, the polychaete fauna of the Galápagos Islands is poorly known. In summarizing the species that have been recorded from the islands since the middle of the nineteenth century several facts are obvious. First, collections have mostly been random or concentrated in special habitats or substrata. Second, most papers that have described species of polychaetes from the Galápagos Islands have done so without any effort to synthesize or interpret the records with available biogeographic data. Third, based upon a review of the available records, a misleading picture of the fauna emerges because families that contain numerous species on other coastlines, have rarely been recorded from the Galápagos. The lack of records of these families suggests that some habitats have not been adequately sampled.
