Why Cops Love and Hate the Work

Abstract

One of the happiest days in a policeman’s life is graduation day at the police academy. It is a day filled with emotionally loaded symbolism: the march into the auditorium, the speeches extolling his professional skill, the proud faces of his family members in the audience, and the feeling of a masculine rite of passage in which he is now a member of an elite fraternity of brave and powerful men who protect the weak and defend the virtuous.
