Methods of Isolating Trophozoites and Cysts

The culturing techniques discussed in Chapter 6 have facilitated the study of Giardia duodenalis trophozoites. However, only G. duodenalis from relatively few host species have been cultured. G. muris, G. agilis, and G. duodenalis from other hosts have not been cultured successfully. The study of the trophozoites of these species requires their isolation directly from the host. Mucosal smears, intestinal washings, and fecal smears are suitable for some morphological studies but are highly contaminated with debris.
