Abstract
Researchers have sought, for a variety of reasons, to develop a system in which a given strain of Giardia could infect laboratory animals, cause disease that mimics giardiasis in humans, and is excreted as cysts that in turn will reliably infect other animals. The reasons for developing such an animal model have been as diverse as studying the mechanism of Giardia pathogenesis, analyzing the characteristics of Giardia infections, determining the stability and infectivity of trophozoites and cysts, studying the host immune response, and ensuring a continuing supply of cysts from a known strain of the organism.
