The Concept of Screening Revisited

Abstract

Screening for health problems and handicapping conditions has been recommended as a preventive measure for more than 40 years. Initially, it began in developing countries to identify individuals who constituted a health hazard to others in the community, such as those harboring an infectious disease that, if not isolated or controlled, might spread. An example is the screening for carriers of malaria. This use of screening spread to the United States and other developed countries, which screened for persons harboring tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, such as syphilis. A more recent example of screening to protect the general public is the screening of individuals who may be airplane hijackers and therefore present a threat to other passengers.
