Physical Activity and Growth of the Child

  • Chapter
Postnatal Growth Neurobiology

Abstract

Whereas knowledge about the effect of exercise on child growth has been expanding rapidly in recent years, it is still quite amazing how many gaps exist in our understanding of this subject since D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson wrote his classic treatise On Growth and Form almost 70 years ago. A survey of the literature reveals that while much is known, much remains to be learned.

[a] condition of strain, the result of stress, is a direct stimulus to growth itself. This indeed is no less than one of the cardinal facts of theoretical biology. The soles of our boots wear thin, but the soles of our feet grow thick, the more we walk upon them: therefore it would seem that the living cells are “stimulated” by pressure, or what we call “exercise”, to increase and multiply.

D’Arcy Thompson
