Understanding Child Sexual Abuse
The sexual abuse of children has become an enormous concern for parents and professionals. The professional literature on this topic is overwhelmingly large and diverse, ranging from clinical case studies to empirical research to comprehensive review papers. In this chapter, we have tried to condense this large volume of work and focus on issues that we view as central to understanding child sexual abuse. Thus, this chapter provides a brief overview of definitional issues, prevalence, and characteristics of sexual abuse of boys and girls, characteristics of perpetrators, the long- and short-term effects of sexual abuse and factors that mediate these effects, issues of hidden (or repressed) memories of childhood sexual abuse, and finally, issues regarding sexual abuse in day care settings.
