Abstract
Nursing is both an art and a science. The uniqueness of nursing is the ability to integrate factors of the nurse-client relationship and science in developing interventions that maintain or improve health. There are few nursing roles and tasks that, individually, could not be performed by another health care professional. Other health care professionals, however, do not have the generalized preparation that nurses have, and as a result cannot perform the broad spectrum of nursing activities. Information about the client and the client’s environment is integrated with knowledge in a holistic way to tailor interventions for individuals and groups. Nursing has a much broader view of health promotion than other disciplines. Because nurses work with both well and ill clients, health promotion involves advancing a person’s health along a health-illness continuum. The role of the nurse may encompass the roles of client/family/community advocate, educator, consultant, and coordinator of services as well as care provider.
