Early in the development of this project, I proposed a triadic model for understanding the role of examinations in the dynamics of a course. The elements of the model include the “what” of a course (what students are expected to learn), the “how” of the course (how students are expected to learn it), and the “how well” of the course (the course’s assessment/evaluation process). According to the model, the best educational outcomes are achieved when these three elements are well integrated with one another. Conversely, problems with a course can often be understood in terms of the lack of correspondence between the elements.
