Abstract

Hyperleukocytosis is defined as a white blood cell count (WBC) of greater than 100,000/µl and is usually a feature of myeloproliferative or lymphoproliferative disorders (leukemias). An elevated WBC may occur in the chronic leukemias, in which there is a proliferation of the mature forms of white blood cells, or in acute leukemias, including blastic crisis of chronic myelocytic leukemias, in which the hyperleukocytosis reflects primarily blasts.
