The Organizational Differentiation of Students in Schools as an Opportunity Structure

Abstract

A large part of the sociological research on educational processes in the last twenty years has been concerned with “educational opportunities” Increasing and equalizing opportunities have been goals used to justify much educational policy making and educational research. The title of the research report that marked the beginning of modern large-scale quantitative sociological research on education—Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966)—contains the three most frequently found words in research proposals and research reports by sociologists in the two decades since then.
