Abstract

The aim of this book is to present, in a systematic manner, the most recent theoretical formulations on school organization and schooling processes. Much of the previous research in sociology of education has been empirical and atheoretical; few major theoretical analyses of educational issues can be found in the literature. The theoretical work that does exist is generally found in discrete papers and rarely brought together with other theoretical contributions on the same or related topics. Rarely does a group of sociologists identify an important topic in education and jointly attempt to conceptualize the issues related to that topic, each from his or her own perspective. A unique feature of this volume is that the primary goal of the authors of all the chapters was to conceptualize the schooling process and to present new theoretical models of how schools operate.
