By the time a child is 2 years old he has two years of speech development, or, more strictly, development of communication, behind him. Bruner (1978), without any exaggeration, could claim:

... the child communicates before he has language. He does so in order to carry out certain functions that are vital to the species. These primitive communicative acts are effected by gesture, vocalization, and the exploitation of context. (p. 65)
