Who Believes in a Just World
Throughout this book, I have been referring to the way “people” react. The clear implication, of course, is that we all need to and do believe that we live in a just world, where rules of deserving and justice apply. But not all people believe that they live in a just world and probably not everyone cares whether the world is just or not. And there probably are some people who would prefer to believe that the world is a miserable jungle run by cynical forces, and that tragedy, pathos, and emptiness are the central themes of human existence.
