The emphasis at ICME IV on applications, problem solving and mathematical modelling led the program committee to include special minicourses to introduce participants to some of the newer topics that may become part of the school curriculum of the 1980’s. Here are vignettes from four of these minicourses, based on material provided by J.H. van Lint (Coding Theory), Ronald Graham (Ramsey Theory), Richard Fateman (Computer Algebra), and Ram Gnanadesikan (Exploratory Data Analysis).
