Abstract
Its obvious at present, that the fundamental problems of molecular biology and biology and biophysics — how high efficiency of biological reactions operating with the involvement of globular proteins is attained — cannot be solved without considering the role of water and its state. Questions regarding efficiency and energetics of biological reactions were not of much importance as long as much of research was aimed at elucidation of structural particularities of nucleic acids and mechanisms of their functioning. What is most important about nucleic acids is stability and precision of functioning, while contribution of processes depending on them is not great in the general energetics of the cell. At the same time, proteins are involved in practically all basic biological processes. Hence, the elucidation of questions concerning the mechanisms providing high efficiency of protein functioning can open the door to solving other problems of molecular biophysics. Solving this problem is also very important for practical application — synthesis of artificial catalysts with properties similar to biological ones. With due consideration of the role of water in biological systems we will probably be able to find the reason for the difference between calculated and observed rates of enzymatic reactions, which differ by 9–12 orders of magnitude (Volkenstein, 1975).
