Properties of Thin Films for Solar Cells

Abstract

A comprehensive review of the literature on semiconducting thin films is beyond the scope of this book. Instead, we will, in this chapter, restrict ourselves to a discussion of those semiconducting thin films that have been prepared or suggested specifically for fabricating thin film solar cells. Further, we will consider only the properties relevant to photovoltaic operation. As the properties of semiconducting thin films are not general in nature but, rather, unique to the material and the technique of deposition, we have reviewed the individual properties with specific reference to a particular material and with special emphasis on comparisons among films prepared by different deposition techniques. In Sections 6.4 and 6.5 we give brief descriptions of the behavior of metal films and insulating films, respectively, as these films are integral parts of thin film solar cells, especially Schottky-barrier and CIS-type devices.
