The skepticism that accompanied the establishment of the National Endowment for the Arts has gradually dissipated, and most knowledgeable people now recognize the valuable contributions it has made to the arts, particularly in the mounting of impressive exhibits at well-established art museums across the country, and through support of major musical, theater, and opera companies.
