Abstract
When applied to the treatment of psychophysiological disorders, cognitive-behavioral interventions seek to modify physiological symptoms indirectly by altering the way the individual responds cognitively and behaviorally to symptom-related stresses (Holroyd, 1979). Utilization of this treatment often requires not only a familiarity with cognitive-behavioral treatment techniques but also an understanding of the pathophysiology of the disorder being treated and of the ways coping can influence and be influenced by physiological processes. Therefore, we will begin with a general discussion of stress and coping, emphasizing the ways coping can influence psychophysiological symptoms. We will then discuss the treatment of three specific disorders chosen because they illustrate issues and problems that are likely to arise in the treatment of disorders with different etiologies and pathophysiologies.
