Abstract

Ironically, the name von Neumann is now strongly associated with the old-fashioned, single-CPU (Central Processing Unit) computer architecture. Many of today’s computer scientists and engineers have completely forgotton that John von Neumann was also the major pioneer in parallel computing via his research on arrays of computers or cellular automata (Figures 1-1 and 1-2).
