Abstract
Recent reviews of the psychological complications of kidney transplantation1,2 have discussed a number of reactions in recipients, donors, and the family members of each. To meet these social and psychological repercussions many mental health disciplines have provided their expertise over the past decade. A liaison approach in which the mental health specialist works closely with the transplant service has provided a helpful framework for alleviating emotional distress from which both patient and health care personnel have benefited. For example, Collins3 reported improved staff morale and reduced nurse turnover with a liaison approach utilizing a psychiatrist, psychologist, and social worker. There is little question that intervention into these psychological problems has markedly improved the quality of care since Kemph4,5 first brought them to our attention.
