This chapter is devoted to a discussion of what might be termed the “simplest problem of optimal control.” As indicated in Chapter 9, it is the problem of extremizing the values of functionals which depend on control variables. These control variables belong to a given class of functions, satisfy constraints, and steer the state of the system under consideration from a prescribed initial state to a state that is wholly or partly specified.
