Abstract

There is probably more known about Escherichia coli than any other organism. Much of our knowledge of intermediary metabolism, DNA structure and synthesis, transcription and translation has been based on studies of E. coli. Although most E. coli strains exist as symbionts in the human gut, several distinct groups are armed with specific virulence factors and capable of causing serious illness. These pathogenic strains include several categories that cause diarrhea by different mechanisms, affect specific age groups in diverse geographic locations, and lead to a variety of clinical presentations. These enterovirulent strains will be the focus of this chapter.
