Abstract

Obviously, older people may suffer from all of the same types of organic diseases as younger people. However, there are a limited number of these disorders that appear with increased frequency in elderly groups and that are considered particularly problematic. These generally fall within the categories of Dementia and Delirium as categorized in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). These will be described below. Some consideration also will be given to aspects of depression and grieving, because these conditions may be mistaken for dementia or may serve as coexistent complicating conditions with organic dysfunction.
