Depression in Alzheimer’s Disease

Psychological Treatment of Older Adults

Abstract

Depression and dementia often coexist. Although estimates vary, approximately 30% of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) also meet criteria for the clinical syndrome of depression (Teri & Wagner, 1992; Wragg & Jeste, 1989). This syndrome is characterized by dysphoric mood, loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, and associated symptoms such as disturbances of sleep, appetite, fatigue; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, self-reproach; and suicidal ideation or attempts. In addition, an even higher percentage of patients exhibits individual depression symptoms, although not of sufficient severity or duration to merit the diagnosis of depression.
