Observations on Maintaining Endophyte during Backcrossing of Endophyte from Perennial Ryegrass to Annual Ryegrasses

Abstract

An attempt was made to transfer endophyte from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cultivar Grasslands Nui to annual ryegrass (L. multiflorum) via backcrossing for 6 generations. Infected plants were chosen in each generation and used for further back-crossing. In the early backcross generations all progenies had very high levels of endophyte infection and very few endophyte free plants were found, a situation no different to crosses within perennial ryegrass. Plants from the second and third generation backcross were used in the selection of the hybrid ryegrass cultivar Ceres Geyser, released with endophyte in 1990.
