Abstract

To determine the size of gas-molecules Loschmidt, in his famous paper “On the size of air molecules,”1 used a relation between the scattering cross-section of molecules and their mean free path, which had been derived by Maxwell in 1860 and which Loschmidt phrased in the form:

“The diameter of the molecules of a gas is equal to the eightfold mean free path of the molecules multiplied by the condensation-coefficient.”1
