Information, Systems, and Dasein

Work on the role of information systems and IT in competitive advantage is often aligned to strategic positioning models and industry structure analysis of competitive strategy (Porter and Millar, 1985). Latterly the resource-based view of the firm (Peteraf, 1993) has emerged as a counterpoint to industry structure analyses of competitive strategy, and is accompanied by research focusing on the importance of core competence management (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994) and organisational learning (Senge, 1990) in the competitive context. Deriving from the more recent literature and based on the twin premise that:

    the sustainability of an organisation operating in dynamic competitive environments is influenced by the ability of that organisation to respond effectively to new behaviours and opportunities presented by that environment, and that

  2. 2.

    organisational learning is key to developing “appropriate responses” in this context.
