Abstract

It is a maxim when drawing Rich Pictures that one does not look for systems. However, it is common for analysts to draw these pictures by first looking at sub-settings and gradually build the whole picture from these. All this implies that they have some idea as to what constitutes the whole since they often seem to be taking it apart to find out how it functions. Thus it seems we have a dilemma—on the one hand we need to have some view of the whole (at least its purpose) but at the same time we do not want to look for systems as such (which imply a way of fulfilling some purpose).
