A New Systems Methodology and Systemic Sustainability in an Engineering Company

Abstract

This paper describes progress with an action research programme dedicated to the development of a new systems methodology. CVAM was first described in detail by Castle (1995). Firmly placed within the interpretive paradigm it fulfils a particular need in integrating strategy and operational decision making. The literature of operations management urges us to consider trade offs and focused operations, yet only simple algorithms (Slack, Chambers, Harland, Harrison, and Johnston, 1995) and profiles (Hill, 1985) are on offer. CVAM is designed to assist managers with a guide to action in these areas. This paper first presents a brief overview of the new methodology as it stands now, in October 1996. The main findings of the action research carried out earlier in 1996 are then discussed in terms of the contribution they have made to its current state.
