Protective Effect of Taurine against Reperfusion Injury in Cultured Rat Astrocytes

Astrocytes, the most abundant glial cells in the brain, are considered to have physiological and pathological roles in neuronal activities. Goldman et al. 3 and we11 independently reported that the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger is present in cultured astrocytes. The Na+/Ca2+ exchanger plays an important role in regulation of [Ca2+]i, the antiporter being bi-directional: the forward mode causes Ca2+ efflux, and the reverse mode causes Ca2+ influx.
