The Antioxidative Role of Selenium in Cadmium Chronic Intoxication
Cadmium is known to be one of the most toxic environmental and industrial pollutants. In the Czech Republic, 10–20 percents of manufactured foodstuffs have been contaminated with cadmium (Cd) — due to polluted soils — in levels surpassing the tolerable concentration. As the Cd — induced toxicosis is partly characterized by the tissue injuring oxidative processes (1), dietary antioxidants are believed to ensure the effective prevention of oxidant damage. Due to biological interaction of Cd with selenium (Se), the Se — compounds are supposed to hinder Cd — oxidant activity. However, in the area of Middle Europe including the region of Czech Republic, the selenium dietary intake has been rather low (2). Nevertheless, some people have been used to take regularly pharmaceuticals containing Se and other trace elements. As a danger of adverse action in case of non adequate Se — intake arises, an examination of oxidant / antioxidant interrelationships of Cd and Se is of interest. Our aim was to clarify some oxidation / reduction aspects of a subchronic Cd — intoxication at subcellular level which was, in parallel, modified by a dietary intervention with selenium.
