Trace Elements and Other Antioxidants in Alcohol-Related Cirrhosis and Chronic Pancreatitis

  • Chapter
Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements

Abstract

Excessive alcohol intake is considered to be a major cause for developing cirrhosis and chronic pancreatitis. These two diseases correspond to a degenerative process of tissue parenchyma associated with cell destruction and fibrosis. The cause of both these diseases is probably multifactorial: genetic predisposition, toxic action of alcohol, immune dysregulation, enhancement of fibrosis production and deleterious effect of free radicals. The generation of toxic free radicals from the metabolism of ethanol by hepatic cytochrome P450 II E1 has been implicated in alcoholic liver disease (1).
