Robust Image Coding and Transport in Wireless Networks Using Non-Hierarchical Decomposition

This paper proposes the use of multiple description coding for reliable image transmission in wireless networks. Specifically, we propose to use non-hierarchical decomposition to split an original image into several equally important sub-images, which are then coded and transmitted independently. The decomposition is accomplished by down-sampling the original image using multiple interleaving sampling lattices. We also present a method for estimating the original image from partially received sub-images. Finally, we examine the trade-offs between coding efficiency and reconstruction quality achievable by using different pre-filters in the decomposition process.
