Abstract
Although recently a lot of interest has been generated in the topic of “Wireless ATM,” whether this marriage of two of the hottest topics in communications in the mid-’90s makes any sense is still questionable. According to the announced plans, the FCC will allocate 350 MHz of bandwidth in the 5 GHz band for schools and libraries to inexpensively access the Internet, and also for community networking. In addition, the ATM Forum formed a study group on wireless ATM. Clearly, there is government interest to initiate new services and make access to these new services more commonly available, and to open new opportunities for entrepreneurs. Similarly, there is interest in the commercial world to introduce new products and new services for wireless ATM. Whether technology is available to respond to these needs is a question we will try to answer in this paper (Figure 1).
