Abstract
Women are particularly at risk for negative consequences of sexual behavior. Traditionally, women have been subject to the larger share of responsibility for preventing pregnancy and for dealing with outcomes of unplanned pregnancies. With the risks of contracting HIV and other STDs on the rise, the stakes associated with unprotected sex become much higher. These risks are compounded for women living in poverty. Table 5.1 shows ethnic differences in reported cases of AIDS for U.S. women in 1996.
