Abstract

We discuss the appearence of quantum electrodynamic effects in superconducting circuits. We concentrate on one simple system; a thick superconducting ring containing a single Josephson weak link. We construct a Hamiltonian for the weak link ring and solve the time-independent Schrödinger equation to find its energy eigenstates. We then describe a method of probing the behaviour of this macroscopic quantum circuit through its response to an applied magnetic flux, giving experimental and theoretical results.
