Abstract

The geographic distribution of the main types of human cancers is such that variations up to 100- and even 1000-fold exist for the incidence of specific tumors, suggesting that environmental factors play a critical role in their development. (54) Furthermore, if chemicals are generally believed to play the major role, microbiological agents should not be overlooked. Because carcinogenesis is accepted by most epidemiologists to represent a multistep and multifactorial process, (37,172) both chemical and biological carcinogens mays interact in such a process.
