Abstract
Existence of thymic carcinoma as an entity of mediastinal tumors has been accepted for the last 20 years or so, until when diagnosis of thymic carcinoma was almost always questioned for the presence of a primary tumor elsewhere. In fact AFlPfascicle of the second series published in 1976 by Rosa and Levine only briefly mentioned about thymic squamous cell carcinoma (1). Two years later, Levine and Rosai classified malignant thymoma into categories 1 and 2. The catagory 1 is invasive thymoma and category 2 indicated tumors showing structural and cellular atypia, which can be interpreted as carcinoma even in organs other than the thymus (2) (Table 1). A variety of subclassifications of thymic carcinoma have been proposed since then (3–5).
Malignant thymoma, category 2 of Levine and Rosai; “nonorganotypical thymic carcinoma”
