Neuroendocrine Differentiation in Thymic Epithelial Tumors
The classification of thymic epithelial tumors is an issue of some controversy1. Müller-Helmelink et al. proposed a scheme based on the morphological differences of normal thymic epithelial cells: i.e., cortical or medullary2. While their proposed classification is theoretical, it has been successfully applied to thymic epithelial tumors without cellular atypia. However, the morphology of thymic epithelial tumors with cellular atypia is considerably different than that of their normal counterparts. Recently we found that the CD5 molecule, which is authentically expressed in T-lymphocytes and some B-lymphocytes, is expressed in thymic carcinoma and atypical thymoma3.
