  2. 2.

On top of your hourly rate, you have to calculate the cost of marketing yourself and keeping in touch with your clients. You also have to factor in some preparation for a highly paid gig such as teaching a webinar for $250. Even though you are paid to host a webinar, you have to create the slides for it, which might take you another 1 to 2 hours, reducing your hourly rate. However, once you create your slides, you can reuse your content for other webinars, eventually making the $250 hourly rate manifest in reality.

  3. 3.

I did two of these projects in 2018 while I was working full-time. I agreed with my client on a relaxed timeline and worked on these projects 10 hours a week.

  4. 4.

Actually, I am not that proud of this accomplishment, because I could have doubled down on personal brand building in 2016–2017 at the expense of gaining career capital as a professional. However, I chose not to go down that path, because I have seen where personal brand building leads to in the case of people who leveraged the opportunity of building an online presence to escape from work. I believe in “moving toward” motivation, and escaping from work does not motivate me. Maximizing career capital does.

  5. 5.

Back then, republic was included in the name of the country.

  6. 6.

Exceptions apply. For instance, in business, a PhD may slightly hinder your connections with self-made business partners having no formal education.

  7. 7.

Exceptions apply. One of my peers from university committed to an IBM lab and earned a starting salary of around $50,000 after graduation in Hungary, where others were happy to earn $15,000 a year (2006 data).

  8. 8.

For instance, research the Scrum certification offered by the Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org. One provides you with an easy test for obligatory expenses of more than $1,000 and a regular renewal fee, while the other allows you to complete a hard test in exchange for $150 (2019 data).

  9. 9.

Emphasis is on the word credible, because obviously, scams also surface. Some scammers present themselves as an alternative to traditional education and justify a high price tag. Some of the most damaging and deceptive programs have been shut down by the American government.
