Physical vs. Virtual Server Environments

  • Eric Kralicek

Chapter 7 touched on physical and virtual server solutions and hinted at the varied benefits of both technologies for IT organizations. One of the best ways to start evaluating which solution fits best with any particular organization is to plan both solutions on paper and analyze which is more cost effective. Key points in making the decision rest on what type of funding your organization has, how flexible your organization wants to make their IT infrastructure, and what will be the expected growth rate for your proposed server farm. Other considerations include the type of operating systems at hand, the physical building limitations, and the communications infrastructure outside your organization’s IT operations.
