Abstract

There are certain basic developer workflows to which you must become accustomed if you intend to build Windows 10 UWP apps, regardless of the technology stack you choose to use. At a fundamental level, having a good understanding of how to access the exposed file system is, if not critical, quite important to development in a given system. Indeed, the usefulness of your Control Corral samples would be limited if you did not provide a way to store information so that you could read it at a later time. This chapter introduces the various mechanisms the UWP provides for interacting with files and folders by exposing you to the APIs used to work with them. Detailed examples are provided to help you work through how these APIs function. By the end of this chapter, you should understand how to perform basic file access; how to use the built-in pickers to read and write to locations outside the isolated file system; how to configure your app to access user folders such as Music, Pictures, and Videos; how to access external storage; and how to expose files to other apps through shared storage, and customized pickers and choosers.
